This is a play platform with other babies. Here is a better picture of the woven mat that is prevalent throughout all of the baby surfaces. This mat is placed over a stainless steel surface, and is relatively rough. It looked to be either bamboo or palm, but it was hard to tell and we didn't think to ask. We think this, and not scabies, is the primary cause of the callouses and sores on the boys knees, wrists, elbows, and ankles (although scabies surely entered at these points as well). This was a point of irritation for the USCIS officer when we got to the immigration interview, as apparently the orphanage director was showing off the new laundry equipment the French had donated, but still does not use sheets. The children have some toys, but they are shared and not a ton of them available.
